ADHD in Girls and Women: Why It Is Often Missed Until Later in Life
ADHD Does Not Always Look the Way We Expect
When people hear the term ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), they often picture a child who is constantly moving, interrupting, or struggling to sit still. However, this image does not represent everyone, especially many girls and women with ADHD.
In females, ADHD symptoms can often be quieter and less disruptive, making them easier to overlook. Instead of obvious hyperactivity, many girls may experience difficulties with focus, organization, time management, emotional regulation, and completing tasks. Because these challenges are not always visible, they may be mistaken for personality traits, anxiety, stress, or lack of effort.

Why ADHD Is Frequently Missed in Girls
Many girls with ADHD develop coping strategies to manage their symptoms. They may work harder than their peers, spend extra time completing assignments, rely heavily on reminders, or appear successful while experiencing significant internal struggles.
Some common signs that may be overlooked include:
- Frequent daydreaming or difficulty staying focused
- Trouble organizing schoolwork or daily responsibilities
- Forgetfulness despite strong effort
- Feeling overwhelmed by routine tasks
- Emotional sensitivity or difficulty managing frustration
- Procrastination and difficulty completing projects
Because girls are often less likely to display disruptive behaviors, their struggles may not immediately raise concerns at home or in school. This can delay evaluation and support.
ADHD in Women: When Life Demands Increase
For many women, ADHD symptoms may become more noticeable during major life transitions—such as college, career responsibilities, relationships, or parenthood. Increased demands on organization, planning, and multitasking can make previously manageable challenges much harder. Many women are diagnosed later in life after years of experiencing difficulties with focus, productivity, emotional regulation, or maintaining routines. Some may have previously been treated for anxiety or depression before ADHD is considered as part of the bigger picture.
The Importance of a Comprehensive Evaluation
Recognizing ADHD in girls and women requires looking beyond stereotypes. A thorough psychiatric evaluation considers personal history, symptoms across different settings, daily functioning, and other conditions that may overlap with ADHD, including anxiety, depression, autism spectrum disorder, or learning difficulties.
Early identification and appropriate treatment can help individuals better understand their challenges, build effective strategies, and improve confidence in academic, professional, and personal life.
Supporting Better ADHD Awareness
ADHD is not a reflection of intelligence, motivation, or character. With the right understanding and individualized care, children, teenagers, and adults with ADHD can develop strategies that allow them to succeed.
As a board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist, Dr. Priti Kothari provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and personalized treatment for ADHD and related mental health concerns. Increasing awareness of ADHD in girls and women is an important step toward ensuring that fewer individuals spend years searching for answers.
