Body Image

Adolescence is a time of rapid change, not just physically but emotionally and socially. It is a stage where identity begins to take shape, and body image often becomes a central part of how young people understand themselves. In Markey’s (2010) invited commentary on why body image matters in adolescent development, she notes that body image is closely linked to self-esteem, relationships, and well-being in adolescents. For many adolescents, how they feel about their body is not just about appearance. It becomes a lens through which they evaluate their worth.
During adolescence, the body changes quickly, often in ways that feel unpredictable or beyond one’s control. At the same time, there is increased awareness of peer opinions, social comparison, and cultural standards of beauty. Social media and popular culture can intensify this pressure by presenting narrow and often unrealistic ideals. As a result, adolescents may begin to compare themselves to others more frequently, which can lead to dissatisfaction, shame, or a sense of not being enough. This heightened self-awareness, combined with a growing need for social acceptance, can make body image feel central to their identity (Rogers, 2022).
Markey’s work emphasizes that body image is closely connected to mental health during this stage. Adolescents who struggle with negative body image are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and disordered eating behaviors. These struggles can also affect how they engage socially. For example, a teen who feels uncomfortable in their body may withdraw from friendships, avoid activities, or hesitate to express themselves. Over time, this can limit opportunities for connection and growth, reinforcing feelings of isolation.
At the same time, adolescence is not only a period of vulnerability, but also an opportunity. With the right support, young people can develop resilience and a more compassionate relationship with their bodies. A positive body image does not mean always feeling confident or satisfied. Rather, it involves accepting one’s body, appreciating its functions, and reducing harsh self-judgment. This kind of mindset supports healthier identity development, confidence, and overall well-being (Markey, 2010; Rogers, 2022).
It is important to recognize that body image struggles during adolescence are common, but they should not be dismissed. When negative thoughts about the body begin to interfere with daily life, relationships, or mental health, it may be a sign that additional support is needed. Reaching out to a trusted adult, school counselor, or mental health professional can be an important step. These supports can help adolescents process their experiences, challenge harmful beliefs, and build healthier coping strategies.
Families, educators, and communities also play a powerful role in shaping body image. Creating environments that promote acceptance, encourage open conversations, and value qualities beyond appearance can help adolescents feel more secure in themselves. Even small changes in how adults talk about bodies, food, and self-worth can have a lasting impact.
Adolescence is a foundational stage for identity development, and body image is a key part of that process. By understanding the connection between body image and adolescent development, we can better support young people as they navigate this complex time. And for those who are struggling, seeking help is not a sign of weakness. It is a meaningful step toward healing, growth, and a stronger sense of self.
